NYAGRA on Christine Quinn’s record as Speaker
25 June 2009– As Speaker of the New York City Council, Christine Quinn declined to take the administration to court over the New York City Department of Education’s refusal to fully implement the Dignity in All Schools Act (DASA), enacted over Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto in 2004; instead, Quinn collaborated with the mayor’s office and the Department of Education on Respect for All, which has proven completely ineffective in addressing the epidemic of bullying and bias-based harassment in NYC public schools. – The Speaker has failed to hold the Department of Education to account for its failure to effectively implement the chancellor’s regulation (A-832) that is supposed to address bullying and bias harassment in lieu of DoE’s refusal to fully implement DASA.– The Speaker has collaborated with the mayor’s office in blocking the Human Rights GOAL bill (Int. No. 731), which could have a potentially significant impact in addressing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression faced by members of the LGBT community in New York [...]

50th birthday benefit for NYAGRA & TLDEF
On Nov. 4, nearly a hundred people crowded into the William Bennett Gallery to help me celebrate my 50th birthday and to support the New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy(NYAGRA) and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF). Michael Silverman, the executive director of Transgender Legal, and Therese Rodriguez, executive director of the Asian/Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS (APICHA) gave speeches, as did I. Folks from APICHA brought sushi, water, soda and juice for the occasion, and we were surrounded by works of art by the great Salvador Dali. Michael Silverman talks about the work of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) Among those present were Council Member Gale Brewer, who represents the Upper West Side in the New York City Council and who was a co-sponsor of the transgender rights law enacted by the Council in 2002; Paul Kobrak from the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene; Jarron Magallanes, Robert Murayama, Ding Parajon & Charlie Solidum of APICHA; Jarad Ringer of the New York City [...]

transgender health care provider protocol
Transgender Health Initiative of New York (THINY) Policy & Protocol for Serving Transgendered Patients In its broadest sense, the transgender community encompasses anyone whose identity or behavior falls outside of stereotypical gender norms. Transgender has become an “umbrella” term that is used to describe a wide range of identities and experiences, including preoperative, postoperative, and nonoperative transsexual people, male and female crossdressers and those referred to as “transvestites,” “drag queens,” or “drag kings”. The term transgender can also refer to intersex individuals, and men and women whose appearance or characteristics are perceived to be gender-atypical. In order to meet the needs of this diverse patient population, the Transgender Health Initiative of New York (THINY) recommends the following: 1. Hospitals and other health care [...]
